ARCHIVE ARTICLE: American Society of Plastic Surgeons Names Dr. Roxanne Guy First Female President
MELBOURNE, FL – Roxanne Guy, MD, director, Brevard Plastic Surgery and Skin Treatment Center, was named the first female president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the world’s largest plastic surgery association and the foremost authority on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. Dr. Guy took office at Plastic Surgery 2006, the Society’s annual scientific meeting, held October 6-11 in San Francisco, CA. She will serve for one year.
“The ASPS is a wonderful organization and I am proud to have the opportunity to serve as its president,” said Dr. Guy. “The public can take comfort in knowing that the Society’s members are plastic surgeons who have at least five years of surgical training (with a minimum of two years of plastic surgery training), and are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. ASPS Member Surgeons must also adhere to a strict code of ethics, comprehensive patient safety standards and lifelong continuing medical education. Over the next year, ASPS will continue to provide its members with the tools for best practices in plastic surgery and offer the public accurate, up-to-date information on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery.”
Dr. Guy has served as chair of the ASPS Public Education and Advocacy committees, as Iraq International Services Task Force liaison and has been an integral member of the Breast Implant Task Force.
Dr. Guy is an active member of the Florida Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, Southeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons, American Association of Plastic Surgery, American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons and American Medical Association. She received her medical degree and completed her plastic surgery residency at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, Springfield, Ill., and board certification from The American Board of Plastic Surgery in 1985. Dr. Guy has been in practice for more than 20 years.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons is the largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons in the world. With more than 6,000 members, the society is recognized as a leading authority and information source on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. ASPS comprises 94 percent of all board-certified plastic surgeons in the United States. Founded in 1931, the Society represents physicians certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery or The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
